hello. We don’t just write and produce films. We want to change the way filming is done to improve the quality of life for professionals and standards for disability.
Ciao.
Yo. There is an admirable appetite within the Television & Film Industry for projects which place ‘representation’ and ‘diversity’ at their heart. Whilst we applaud this, and whilst at ORCA we believe in re-imagining the status quo when it comes to race, gender, disability, wealth inequality & climate change: we are not interested in optics.
At ORCA FILM we honour what ‘representation’ & ‘diversity’ really mean. All of our work has been written through the lens of neuro-diversity or disability. And although we welcome the current attention that disability has attracted within the industry, we believe we can - and must - do more.
Instead of shoe-horning ‘diversity’ into our films, here at ORCA FILM we will create the conditions through which diversity can thrive.
If we are to take disability as an example - on a macro level: this requires a commitment to an atmosphere of listening & true access. On a micro level: production schedules that work for us all: weekends off, appropriate breaks, a longer lunch break for all, less last minute deadlines, more respect.
The irony is that current structures don’t just disenfranchise the disabled community, they disenfranchise all of us. It is not possible to work 6 days a week for 14 hours a day: no if you are pregnant, not if you are cancer, not if you have child care issues, but not even if you want to maintain healthy relationships with those closest to you.
